I got this roll-up fish ruler to measure the fish I catch while fishing on the boat. There are a couple things to look for in a ruler: easy & quick to use, accurate, and easy to store. This ruler meets them all. When rolled out on a flat surface, the ruler is a bump-board, where there is a vertical section at 0” where can push the nose of the fish against to get an accurate read on the length at the tail. This makes it both quick and easy. The markings are accurate and the material appears to be dimensionally stable so the length shouldn’t change. Lastly, it rolls up nicely [unlike the metal bump-board rulers], has a Velcro-like strap to keep it rolled up, and a mesh bag for compact, easy storage – where space is at a premium on the boat. Of note is that the material does not retain the curl when unrolled.The only downsides I see are the numbering and the length. The numbers are visible, but there are special marks a 10” boundaries when we are used to seeing special marks at the foot or 12” boundaries. In the heat of the moment, this could cause some confusion and become an issue. The other is the overall length: 53 inches or almost 4.5 feet. It’s hard for me to imagine a situation where a roll-up ruler that long would be required, or useful – if the fish really are that large, then I think you’d be using a different type of ruler. On a typical fishing boat, you’d be hard-pressed to find a large enough flat space to roll it out fully. Likely any boat big enough, or where fish that large are expected, again, they would have a different type of ruler. Fortunately, the material is easy to cut down to a more manageable length like 36” for me and my boat. But these two issues do make me deduct a half a star, and I choose to round down in this case.The price for this fish ruler at the time of this review is $16, a fairly good price for a decent, if not perfect, fish ruler.
